It’s a conversation many people have had before – what would you do if you found out you won the lottery? What do lottery winners spend their money on?

This question has become a reality for so many lucky people across the UK. So what exactly do lottery winners spend their money on?

The National Lottery conducted some research and shared a list of the top 10 things Brits would do after finding out they were lottery winners. Would you…

  1. Kiss my partner
  2.  Jump up and down
  3. Scream
  4. Burst into tears
  5. Start working out who to give the money to
  6. Call mum
  7. Run around the house
  8. Book a holiday
  9. Dance
  10. Sit in silence

While these are the most common answers, some lucky winners have shared their more unique plans.

An acre of the moon

Back in 2000, David Copeland won £1 million on the lottery. He made some pretty standard purchases, such as buying champagne, going on a few cruises and buying a new car.

However, some of his most interesting purchases was an acre of land on the moon and deeds to land on Venus and Mars.

Become a rockstar

In October 2005, Roger Griffiths and Lara Griffiths became lottery winners when they won £1.83 million with the National Lottery.

Both Roger and Lara quit their jobs, purchased new cars, took various international trips and purchased multiple properties.

Roger also decided to revisit the dreams of his youth – to become a rockstar. Roger reunited his university band, hired a  £1,000-a-month publicist and regularly performed at the £240-a-night Sanderson hotel. The band went on to release one single which was released in September 2006 and sold 600 copies.

The dream home in Selston

When you think about winning the lottery, one of the first things people say they will do with the winnings is to buy a property. Most people tend to think about buying a mansion or moving somewhere overseas.

However, for 55-year-old lottery winner Alan Rowley, he chose to purchase a new property in Selston, just five miles away from his existing house in Eastwood. He also spent some of his £1.9 million winnings on building a state-of-the-art metrology machine in the back garden.

Alan stated that having a lot of friends and family in Eastwood was the reason behind not moving too far away. Alan, who launched his own cleaning business, stated he will take more of an administrative role and looks forward to retirement.

Robbie Williams tickets

Cheryl Brudenell won £916,915 with the National Lottery back in 1997. Since then, Cheryl has spent her winnings on her passion – Robbie Williams. She has seen the singer perform around 40 times, in places including Barcelona, Las Vegas, Berlin, Belgium and Estonia.

Cheryl got to meet her idol in Las Vegas in 2001.

A disused jail

In 1996, Belfast bus driver Peter Lavery became a lottery winner when he pocketed £10.2 million in the National Lottery. In the first few years, he made some big purchases – houses, new cars, lavish holidays.

Once the novelty of these purchases wore off, Peter decided to be smarter with his spending and purchased the disused Crumlin Road jail, which he has turned into a whiskey distillery. While this purchase cost him £5 million, the business has become extremely lucrative, with Peter saying the distillery “is like winning the lottery again.”

A Dyson vacuum cleaner

Terry Falgate won £1 million with his EuroMillions Lucky Dip ticket in November 2019. Since then, he has made one purchase – a new “unbelievable” Dyson vacuum cleaner, valued at £500.

The agricultural contractor plans to stay at work but will eventually reduce his hours and will help his children, who are both in their 20s, have a better future.

Continue to work

In November 2019, Steve Thomson and Lenka Thomson won £105 million on the EuroMillions. This is the ninth biggest jackpot ever recorded within the UK.

Rather than rushing to spend all the money, the humble lottery winner told The Mirror he planned to return to work as a builder, stating he did not want to let customers down before Christmas. Steve has made one purchase since winning the jackpot – buying a second-hand car.
